Mock Hunt (Saturday 11 a.m.)

If you have ever wanted to learn about and try riding on a foxhunt in a controlled environment, a Mock Hunt is for you!

This gentle introduction to fox hunting for horses and riders will have experienced, helpful foxhunters riding in all groups. The Tipton country is unsurpassed in beauty, bordering the Cedar River, with hills and coops and streams to cross. Those who choose to jump will have an opportunity to jump coops and other natural obstacles. It will start at 11 a.m. and go about an hour and a half, followed by luncImage 7h in the hunt country, with a $7 suggested donation per person for lunch. There is no charge for the Mock Hunt, and all ages are invited.

We hope anyone who can ride a horse in walk, trot and canter comes out and plays.

Attire is casual. Helmet and hard soled shoes required. We encourage riders to arrive around 10 a.m. for the 11 a.m. start. A stirrup cup is provided before the hunt.

IMG_4075lowresThis will be a fun, educational morning activity, with explanation of hunt traditions and etiquette and we will have several fields of riders – jumping and non-jumping, as well as walk/trot only.

Riders will need to sign a North Hills Hunt waiver. Please print it out, sign it, and present it to the hunt secretary upon your arrival.

Please contact Camie Stockhausen for further information, directions to the hunt country and to RSVP for the Mock Hunt. Thank you and we look forward to seeing you there!

Trail Ride (Saturday 1:30 p.m.)

Come out and ride some of the loveliest property in eastern Iowa, with the most interesting group of fun-loving people you are likely ever to meet. Arrive early enough for the 12:30 lunch ($7 donation to cover costs, please) and meet like-minded people. We’ll ride the country at a relaxed pace, taking in the scenery, crossing streams and having fun.

The cost to join the ride is a $25 donation to help feed the North Hills Hounds. No fee for NHH members. Riders will need to sign a North Hills Hunt waiver. Please print it out, sign it, and present it to the hunt secretary upon your arrival.

Please contact Lyse Strnad for further information, directions to the hunt country and to RSVP for the Trail Ride. Thank you and we look forward to seeing you there!

Hunter Pace (Sunday 10 a.m.)

225833_588293994525889_1419086455_nThe North Hills Hunt is sponsoring a Hunter Pace at the spectacular Catalpa Corner Horse Park near Iowa City. A hunter pace is a fun competition where riders ride a marked course individually or in a group. There are jumps on the course, which are entirely optional. Attire is neat and casual, hard hat and hard soled shoes required. The riders ride in all gaits and try to match the secret pace set by some experienced fox hunt riders who included walk, trot and canter when they went around the course to set the pace. The idea is to simulate the pace of a typical day out hunting – thus the term “Hunter Pace.”

A course will be set up with BN and Novice level fences, and all jumps are completely optional, just like on a hunt. The fee for up to three trips around the course is $50 for non-members, $40 for NHH members.

There will be food available on the grounds and prizes will be awarded at lunch. We encourage everyone to bring lawn chairs and hang out to have lunch and learn if they won an award. It is a fun day in the country!

Tentative schedule: Riders on course from 10-1, followed by lunch.
